In the second of two murals (the first, Running Snoopy), originally painted on a bedroom wall of the family home in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is an early version of Charlie Brown dressed as a cowboy. His hat bears the name “Monte,” the oldest of Schulz’s two sons. The more true to life depictions in this mural demonstrate Schulz’s belief that to cartoon something well, one should be able to draw it realistically. The shining six-shooters seen here mimic theatrical props from the wildly popular western television shows of the 1950s, like Gunsmoke, for which the Schulzes would host watch parties.

Revisiting their former home in the early 1990s, several members of the Schulz family, including Charles Schulz himself, were astonished to see these murals still in place. The murals had been proudly cared for by multiple generations of the Abdo family, John and Helene from 1962-1992, and Ken and Karen from 1992-2014. It was during this visit that Schulz inscribed and signed his artworks nearly 40 years after creating them.

In 2014, son Craig Schulz acquired both murals and donated them to the Museum for preservation and display. Both were expertly removed during two intense weeks by Jon Klingelhofer.
