Second Saturday Cartoonist: Gene Luen Yang and Clash Royale Tournament

Join award-winning cartoonist Gene Luen Yang, creator of American Born Chinese (now a Disney+ TV series), as he welcomes The Books of Clash, a new series of graphic novels set in the world of Clash of Clans and Clash Royale. At 2:00 pm, Yang will talk about his work in a live conversation with Thien Pham, creator of Family Style, followed by a book signing and a live Clash Royale tournament!
Experience Clash Royale in an epic tournament on the big screen at the Museum. No experience is necessary—everyone is welcome to play! Try the game out for the first time or demonstrate your Clash skills and win prizes.
The tournament winner will win several exclusive Clash Royale collectibles. Everyone attending will have the chance to go home with an Archer or Hog Rider collectible statuette courtesy of Super Cell and other giveaway prizes.
ABOUT GENE LUEN YANG
Gene Luen Yang began making comics and graphic novels in the fifth grade. In 2006, Yang’s book American Born Chinese was published by First Second Books. It became the first graphic
novel to be nominated for a National Book Award and the first to win the American Library Association’s Printz Award. It also won an Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album.
In 2013, First Second Books released Boxers & Saints, Yang’s two-volume graphic novel about the Boxer Rebellion. Boxers & Saints was nominated for a National Book Award and won the L.A.
Times Book Prize. Gene Luen Yang has done a number of other comics, including Dark Horse Comics’ continuation of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender and DC Comics’ Superman!
In addition to cartooning, Yang teaches creative writing through Hamline University’s MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults and teaches alongside amazing authors like Anne Ursu, Gary Schmidt, Laura Ruby, Matt De La Pena, and more.
In January 2016, the Library of Congress, Every Child A Reader, and the Children’s Book Council appointed Yang the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature.
ABOUT THIEN PHAM
Thien Pham is a graphic novelist, comic artist, and educator based in Oakland, CA. He is the author and illustrator of the graphic novel Sumo and did the art for the middle-grade graphic novel Level Up, written by Gene Luen Yang. His latest book Family Style is a memoir about his family’s immigration to America told through the lens of food. Currently, Pham is working on his next graphic novel, teaching, and eating. A lot.
