“The tournament started here in 1975, but the beginning can be traced back to 1973, when a group called the Senior Sports International staged a competition for athletes 35-and-over that included 35 different sports, including hockey….‘After two years, they asked Sparky [Schulz] if he’d consider hosting the hockey at his place,’ said Shortt. [Former tournament director] Schulz agreed and the rest, as they say, is history. Through word of mouth and an international hockey newsletter, enough information had gotten out about the first tournament at Redwood Ice Arena, and 10 teams applied.”
