Turn Another Page
at the Charles M. Schulz Museum & Research Center
February 9 through June 5, 2011
(Santa Rosa, CA) With the phenomenal success of the Peanuts comic strip, Charles Schulz’s other artistic endeavors often are overlooked. Turn Another Page is the first of three exhibitions at the Charles M. Schulz Museum designed to explore Schulz’s other artistic undertakings. This upcoming exhibition, running February 9 through June 5, 2011, delves into the lesser known yet popular aspect of Schulz’s artistic career – book and magazine illustrations.
Turn Another Page shares with visitors the original drawings and sketches done by Schulz for manuscripts and magazines, including a series of 10 of the 17 illustrations done for World Tennis magazine in the early 1980s.
Schulz was given a list of topics and was asked to illustrate the concept. For one of the tennis topics, Schulz was provided with the statement: Is it necessary to use a racket press in a metal or composite racket? In response, he drew this funny picture of Snoopy in a sad predicament (published in World Tennis magazine, September 1981).
Turn Another Page also exhibits and highlights Schulz’s literary ventures with illustrations for books. In 1962, as Schulz’s new book, Happiness is a Warm Puppy, soared to the top of the best seller’s list, publishers realized the potential for success with the Peanuts Gang outside the comic strip format. Eventually 25 publishing houses, including some of the biggest names in the business, published Schulz’s books. Turn Another Page will include some of the Schulz’s original illustrations for I Never Promised You an Apple Orchard, Dr. Snoopy’s Advice to Pet Owners and Snoopy and the Red Baron.
Turn Another Page will be followed by exhibitions which survey Schulz’s other artistic pursuits. A Change of Scene: Schulz Sketches from Abroad, will run June 8 through October 2, 2011 and will explore his plein air landscape sketches. The last in the exhibition series will run from October 5, 2011 to January 29, 2012. It will focus on advertising illustrations, promotional art for non-profits and cards and drawings from family and friends.
